    Who is this test for?

Prostate checkWomen over 45 years of age, with or without symptoms should take this test if concerned about ovarian cancer. It is useful to have a baseline test for CA125 at age 40, before ovarian cancer is most likely to develop then it is possible to calculate how fast the CA125 level is rising, if at all, from subsequent blood samples.

    What your results mean

Ovarian Cancer TestThere is no routine screening for ovarian cancer by the NHS and some women will unknowingly have a high CA125 (more than 35) that is an indicator of a higher risk of ovarian disease that could be ovarian cancer. A rapidly rising CA125 level even if within the normal range needs to be investigated. That is why repeated tests are essential to accurately assess the level of risk of ovarian cancer. A one-off test has some value but much less so than annual testing because only half of women with early ovarian cancer have a high CA125.

A normal result for your age is therefore reassuring but much more so is a CA125 level that remains the same when repeated. Repeating the test every one or two years is the safest option when screening for ovarian cancer. No screening test is 100% effective but you get much better protection from the disease if you take regular tests.

For even greater protection add HE4 and ROMA to your CA125 request. HE4 is a new marker of ovarian disease and ROMA is a calculated risk of malignancy (cancer) index.
